Honor Students Urged to take Responsibility
Davie County Enterprise Record
By: Mike Barnhardt - Allen Mebane was never an honor student. But the founder of Unifi and president of the Mebane Charitable Foundation told Davie High honor students that he never stopped learning. In October 2005, Smart Start brought Dollywood Foundation's Imagination Library program into the homes of Davie County children. Within one month of implementation, a waiting list was created due to the flood of applications from parents. As U.S. Rep. Virginia Foxx left a newly-constructed classroom at William R. Davie Elementary School last week, she turned to her traveling companion, Congressman John Boehner (R-Ohio), and said "I feel like I just stepped into the future." What Foxx was referring to was the newest 21st century classroom in the Davie school system. Davie County philanthropist Allen Mebane said he had a vision for the children of Davie County. "I believe that with this new curriculum, we can have every child in the county reading by the time they are eight years old or completing third grade," Mebane said during a recent tour of William R. Davie Elementary School.
